Programme: N.I.C.H.E. Programme

NICHE (Nurturing Individual Creativity Harnesses Employment) started in May 2005 and seeks to make the transitional period from school to further education an easy and informed time for young people aged 15-25. By using a creative and innovative approach the project builds essential transferable skills which are important for today’s world of work. The two main aspects of NICHE are:

// Area Specific // broken up into four 8 week blocks looking at team building, Information Technology, interpersonal skills and presentation skills. These workshops are mainly targeted at those young people who have little to no understanding of employment, low motivation and little interest in main stream education. With a creative but relaxed approach young people will find ways to discover hidden talents as well as get practical help in creating CV’s and preparing for interviews.

// Cross boundary // by participating, planning and organising, developing and delivering workshops, with the help of staff, young people begin to build confidence and transferable skills whilst having a deeper understanding of the responsibilities encountered in their chosen career. At the end of this programme young people are encouraged to volunteer for projects in their local community.

// YouthBank // innovative grant making award scheme for young people run by young people. The YouthBank committee is made up of young people aged 11 - 25 who live, work or go to school in the inner East End. Being a part of the YouthBank process either from applying for funding from the committee or by being a part of the committee improves people skills, understanding our community, help to promote a positive image of young people in the East End, improve communication skills, committee skills, decision making skills, debating skills, numeracy and literacy skills. We continuously accept and assess applications and we will be awarding more money to groups in the near future.
